Ultimate Home Entertainment: How to Set Up Your Computer on a Current Television?

Computer systems don’t need to rely on desks and traditional monitors. Thanks to the smart TVs and flat screen units that are properly equipped, you can add virtually any computer to the home entertainment center. This allows you to do everything you can on the computer system with the benefit of the large LCD or plasma display.

For those that use a lot of digital entertainment, this could work perfect as a file server for movies and music. From the comfort of your couch, you can theoretically manage your website’s newsletter while waiting for the commercials during a football game – all from the television.

Knowing the Connections

First and foremost, the television has to be able to support the interface of your computer. The easiest methods of connecting the television through the computer is by using VGA, DVI or HDMI. Many homeowners prefer to use HDMI over other forms for it allows you to hear sound through the television whereas the others only provide video. Both the computer and the television have to support your preferred interface as well. While you can use adapters and converters to make connections such as VGA-to-DVI heads, it still needs to support the ability. If you want to use HDMI, your video card needs to support the connection. Many computers are now built with HDMI because of the capabilities it provides.

Sound Settings for HDMI

If you use HDMI, you may need to check the “Playback” settings in order to make sure sound is going through the cable and not through your default speakers. This is found in the “Sound” settings of your PC. By switching the television system to “Default,” the computer will then send sound to the TV. Other settings you may want to check include the sample rate. Most TVs must use a sample rate of 48kHz, not the 44.1kHz that most computer hardware utilizes.

Changing the Input

Once your computer is connected to the television, all that is left is for you to change the “Input” of the unit. This is usually done from the TV remote. Simply select the input you’re using for the computer and you should be viewing your PC desktop. Depending on the type of system you’re using, the video card may not be able to support the resolution of the display. If this is the case, you may see a black screen and nothing more. Some TVs are capable of adjusting resolutions to accommodate for computer input, and it may be worth the time to read through your owner’s manual to see if this is the case.

The Power of Bluetooth

Using a Bluetooth USB adapter in your computer can allow you to connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with a range of over 30 feet. This can be beneficial if you want to sit in the couch on the other side of the room while you browse the Internet or play your favorite game. These units are usually inexpensive and work exceptionally well to connect a variety of devices including headsets and smartphones.

Having a computer connected to your television can open doors to a plethora of entertainment. Whether you’re using a desktop model or you’re hooking up a laptop, the power of computing can be displayed in your living room for virtually any purpose.

Make the most out of your entertainment center and impress your guests. The file server system alone could save you time and aggravation from trying to stream movies to your TV.
