Not all men show interest in clothes, but for those that do, creating a capsule wardrobe is the perfect way to keep clothing storage to a minimum. Obviously it helps if you are a standard size because you can buy your clothes from any of the main retailers, but even if you do need to look for big and tall men’s clothing in a size to suit, you can still create a capsule wardrobe for all seasons for very little outlay – and here’s how.
1. A Suit
A good quality suit is very deserving of a place in your capsule wardrobe. You can wear a suit to job interviews, weddings, and even funerals. Double-breasted suits have plenty of gravitas, but a single-breasted suit tends to be more versatile.
2. Decent Pair of Denim Jeans
Dark denim is super trendy right now. A dark blue pair of denim jeans is versatile enough to look great with an old t-shirt, a smart shirt, or even a blazer if you want a more formal look. Choose a good brand and look after your denim jeans.
3. Pair of Cords
Jeans can be contentious at times and some bars/restaurants won’t let customers in if they are wearing a casual pair of jeans. Cords are a great alternative to jeans in that they can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion. Cords look great with a shirt and a casual jacket for a Sunday afternoon stroll; equally, you can dress them up by throwing on a tie and some smart shoes for dinner out with the family.
4. Overcoat
All men need a smart overcoat. This is the coat you wear to interviews, business meetings, winter days out, and anywhere you need to look smart and dignified. Black is the best colour to choose as it goes with anything.
5. Hoodie
Hoodies rock! You can wear a hoodie with jeans, gym gear, under a denim jacket, or even your comfy PJs. Hoodies might be associated with young men of dubious intentions, but really a hoodie is the perfect casual garment for any occasion.
6. Casual Shirt
All men should have a dress shirt in their closet – that’s a given – but don’t underestimate the importance of having a couple of casual shirts to match with denim jeans, cords and chinos. Wear your brushed cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled up in the summer, or sleeves down and a hoodie over the top in winter.
7. Selection of Plain White Tees
Plain white tees go with anything apart from a suit (obviously). You can never have enough plain white tees, so buy them in bulk and the moment they start to look a little but grey or worn, throw them out and pull on a brand new one. Top tip: better quality t-shirts last longer.
This is not an exhaustive list and there will be other items you should include in your capsule wardrobe, not least shoes, ties, and a belt. But try and keep the number of items down, as it makes it easier to choose an outfit.
